Switzerland of the Southwest: Ski Apache in Mescalero

Activities in New MexicoThe southwestern portion of this country is home to some of the most unique and compelling terrain to be seen from coast to coast. Typically, when people think of New Mexico, they might associate the area with craggy mesas and wide regions of flatland. However, the mountains in and around Ruidoso provide many unique outdoor adventures, such as hiking, mountain biking and even skiing, making New Mexico a must stop for that year round adventurer and sportsman. So come on down to the Land of Enchantment and have adventures that will last a lifetime. In other words, go to Ski Apache!

Ski Apache is an outdoor recreational location just less than a short drive north of Ruidoso. Open for activities all year long, this reserve features plenty of options for visitors who are looking for new ways to enjoy Mother Nature, whether those people come from near or far. Summer activities include gondola rides, hiking, mountain biking and much, much more. However, since this area is referred to as the “Switzerland of the Southwest,” we should probably talk about skiing. The ski area is in Lincoln County and run by the Mescalero Tribe.

Although Mescalero and surrounding south central New Mexico usually experiences warm weather throughout the year, enough natural snow falls on Sierra Blanca and the other mountains in the Ski Apache range to allow skiers to enjoy a smooth ride down the slopes. 55 trails are serviced by 11 lifts, including New Mexico’s only passenger gondola lift, which offers supreme views of the region.

The 55 trails are well divided amongst beginners, intermediates and experts, so there are trails for everyone, even the greenest of novices, as there are beginner group lessons and ski instruction programs that run all day. If you come as a novice, you’ll leave much improved. The instructors are that good!

Imagine coming in for a week’s stay in scenic New Mexico, leaving the cares of your workday far behind. You spend days at a time whipping down the mountainside of Sierra Blanca, which reaches 12,000 feet above sea level at its peak. Exhausted from a long day of hitting the slopes, you take a leisurely drive back to your townhome or condo at Innsbrook Village Country Club, enjoying many of the same accommodations of any ski lodge without having to deal with heavy crowds.
