Ruidoso, New Mexico is known for its gorgeous landscape and outdoor activities during any season. However, one of our lesser-sung strengths is our arts scene. And the centerpiece of our arts table is the Spencer Theater. The venue was honored as one of seven outstanding theaters in the world by the United Institute of Theater Technology.
It is a $22 million dollar structure, with 514 seats, impeccable acoustics and an intimate setting that plays a perfect host to the artistry of an impressive programming season. The current winter season is not yet over, so if you’re planning on a trip to southern New Mexico, be sure to check out whichever show is playing during your trip. The Firebird, a Russian love story performed over Stravinsky’s score of the same name, is the first act of two ballots being put on by the Ruidoso Dance Ensemble. The second act is another love story, titled Rodeo, about a spirited cowgirl falling for a pioneer. The double act ballot will be performed on Saturday, March 15 at 2 pm and again at 7 pm.
Bella Electric Strings, a rock violin group that has played with Beyoncé, Shakira, and seemingly everyone in between, will be holding the stage on March 22nd at 8pm. They’re arrangements will wow you, covering Queen, Led Zeppelin, and the Beatles.
The national tour of West Side Story will be performing at the Spencer Theater on March 31st for two performances: one at 3pm and another at 8pm. Don’t miss this production; it’s directed by the legend himself, Arthur Laurents, who wrote the libretto for this iconic musical.
Hank and My Honky Tonk Heroes will be performing on Saturday, April 19th at 8 pm. Jason Petty was cited by the New York Post as offering “not just an impersonation of Hank Williams, but a channeling of his ghost.”
Gary Lewis & The Playboys will be performing on Saturday, May 3 at 8 pm. This nostalgia hit maker keeps the audience moving with his songs.
There is a Pre-Performance Buffet Dinner at 6 pm for shows that start at 8 pm for an additional fee. Except for Firebird since it begins at 7 pm and is presented by the Ruidoso Dance Ensemble and not by the Spencer Theater. For more information on the Spencer Theater go to www.spencertheater.com
