It’s no secret: Ruidoso is facing major challenges after the 2024 South Fork Fire left a burn scar that has led to repeated floods this monsoon season. Our prayers go out to all of those affected.
The flood mitigation efforts we have taken at Innsbrook have been met with much success. The advice we were given from the multitude of engineers we consulted was “get the water off the property as quickly as possible.” And that we did. Instead of opting to erect barriers or walls, we removed dams and dug out 10,000 tons (20 million pounds) of soil and debris from the section of Cedar Creek running through our property.
After the devastating July 8th flood, a Ruidoso Fire Official commented, “I’m not sure what you guys did [at Innsbrook], but whatever you did, it worked so much better [than the rest of Ruidoso].”
Luckily, we have seen only minor flood damage, with the worst of it coming with the July 24th flood. Even still, thanks to our hard working Grounds staff and the generous help of several homeowners (special shout out to Jim McBride and Clint Holoman for driving in to help with clean up after the major floods), the affected greens were cleared off of the inches of mud left behind and the entire golf course was playable by the following afternoon.
In the video above, you can see how our preparations respond to the average flood we face: keeping the waters within the bounds of the creek while moving it off the property as fast as possible. This is, of course, still an ongoing battle against the flood waters, but our mitigation efforts are working well.
Our Grounds staff is going above and beyond to clean up the aftermath of the major floods, all while keeping up with their normal maintenance schedule. So whether you’re a guest or homeowner, when you see Juan, Ramiro, or Pablo, be sure to give them a massive thanks for continuing to keep our little paradise in the pines looking pristine.
