It’s November 11, and that means that all across the country citizens are taking a moment to thank the members of our armed forces for their stalwart service and sacrifice. In every corner of the nation, ceremonies are being held to honor the millions of men and women who have protected our freedom for generations.
Veterans Day was originally established by Woodrow Wilson in 1919 to mark the armistice that ended World War I, known at the time as the “war to end all wars.” Since then, warfare has changed in ways we could never have imagined, but the commitment of our servicemen and women has not.
We live in uncertain times fraught with conflict and discord between nations. Thanks to the ongoing selfless efforts of our veterans, however, we’re still able to live safe, comfortable lives here at home. It’s a luxury that so many other people around the world don’t have, and it’s all because of our veterans’ commitment to protecting our freedom and security.
Veterans Day might come just once a year, but that doesn’t mean it should be the only time we take to remember the hard work our veterans. Next time you see a veteran, take a moment to shake their hand and thank them for their service. Too often, these men and women go without the recognition they deserve.
