Fall might just be our favorite time of year here in Ruidoso. With cool breezes, blues skies and colorful foliage, there’s something especially serene about this season. But we’re not the only ones who enjoy autumn in our area. That’s why Ruidoso will be hosting its annual Aspenfest this weekend to welcome the changing season.

Held every year during the first weekend of October, Aspenfest will kick off at 10 a.m. this Saturday with a parade through Midtown Ruidoso. Come early to get a good seat and kick back with friends and family to watch the event. It will begin at the corner of Mechem and Sudderth Drives and travel all the way down to the 700 block of Sudderth.

Stick around after the parade to peruse the hot rod and classic car show at the Ruidoso Downs Racetrack and Casino parking lot. The show will welcome more than 200 classic cars from all over the country, restored to pristine condition and ready to be admired. Whether you’re a gearhead, a history buff or a lover of classic craftsmanship, the Aspenfest car show always promises to be a real treat. Meanwhile, you can also catch an arts and crafts show hosted by the Boys and Girls Club of Sierra Blanca on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

And of course it wouldn’t be fall without a hearty chili to keep us warm. Apsenfest will also feature two chili cook-offs – the New Mexico State Open Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, and the Chile Society Pod Chili Cook-Off on Sunday. Starting at noon on both days, visitors can come down and taste the secret recipes of some of the foremost chili enthusiasts in the country.

With a parade, crafts from local artisans, cool cars and award-winning chili, Aspenfest is a perfect way to celebrate the arrival of autumn. Come down to Midtown Ruidoso this weekend and join in the festivities!
